On Monday, South Africa’s government, which has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, vehement criticized Israel.

In einer Pressekonferenz erklärte Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor, dass South Africa seine Diplomaten entließ, und sagte: „We are… extremely concerned at the continued killing of children and innocent civilians in the Palestinian territories and we believe the nature of the response by Israel has become one of collective punishment.“

We considered it essential to convey the concern of South Africa while simultaneously advocating for a complete cessation [of hostilities].

Israel has not yet made a statement regarding the South African statement, but it insists it is trying to minimize civilian casualties and accuses Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, of using non-combatants as human shields.

On October 7, more than 1,400 people were killed in Israel by fighters from Hamas, which is considered a terrorist organization by the UK, US and other Western powers. More than 230 hostages were also taken, including one South African who has not yet been identified.

Foreign Minister Pandor said the recall of the diplomats was “normal practice,” adding that the envoys would give the government a “full briefing.” Following this, the government will decide whether it can be of assistance or whether a “continued relationship is actually able to be sustained.”

Die Regierung Südafrikas beschuldigte auch Israeli-Ambassador Eliav Belotsercovsky von beleidigenden Aussagen über Südafrikaner, einschließlich Regierungsmitgliedern, die Israels Regierung kritisierten.

The cabinet statement said “The disparaging remarks against those speaking up against the atrocities and the country’s leaders make ambassador Belotsercovsky position more and more untenable.”

Chad, Chile and Colombia have already protested against the military operation in Gaza, and South Africa is not the first country to recall its diplomats from Israel.
